1. Download and install the Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. To start the Windows Update Troubleshooter, open the Start menu and type “Windows Update”.
  2. Click on the “Windows Update” entry in the search results.
  3. On the Windows Update page, click on the “Advanced options” link under the “Updates” heading.
  4. On the “Advanced options” page, click on the “Troubleshoot” link.
  5. On the “Troubleshoot” page, click on the “Windows Update Troubleshooter” link.
  6. Click on the “Start” button to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.
  7. If the Windows Update Troubleshooter finds an issue with your computer’s Windows Update, it will show you a list of possible solutions.
  8. Click on the “Next” button to select a solution from the list.
  9. If the Windows Update Troubleshooter finds that your computer is already up to date, it will show you a message thanking you for using the Windows Update Troubleshooter and will close automatically.

2. Restart your computer and then check for updates

  1. Shut down your computer
  2. Unplug all your devices except for the keyboard, mouse and monitor
  3. Hold down the power button until the computer turns off
  4. Wait about 10 seconds, then plug in the power cord and turn on the computer
  5. Press the F8 key multiple times to open the boot menu
  6. Select the option to start up from a hard drive, CD or USB
  7. Select the option to boot from the Windows installation media
  8. If you are using a USB drive, insert it into the computer and press the Enter key
  9. If you are using a CD, insert it into the computer and press the Enter key
  10. Select the option to install Windows
  11. Follow the on-screen instructions
  12. After Windows is installed, restart your computer
