How do I fix error code 0x8e5e0408?

The error code 0x8e5e0408 happens when the computer is unable to communicate with the printer. This can be caused by several things, such as a loose connection between the computer and the printer, or a problem with the printer's drivers.

1. Restart your computer

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. In the Start menu, click Shut Down.
  3. Click Restart.
  4. In the Windows Restart dialog box, click OK.
  5. After your computer restarts, choose Troubleshoot.
  6. In the Troubleshooting Tools dialog box, click Restart.
  7. In the Restart Options dialog box, click Troubleshoot.
  8. In the Troubleshooting Steps dialog box, click Restart again.
  9. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  10. In the Advanced System Settings section, click the Restart button.
  11. In the Restart Options dialog box, select the option to restart your computer without saving your changes.
  12. Click Restart.
  13. After your computer restarts, choose Finish.

2. Check for updates

  1. In the left-hand pane, click Check for updates
  2. In the right-hand pane, click View available updates
  3. If an update is available, it will be listed in the Available updates list. If the update is not available, it will be listed in the Not available updates list.
  4. To install the update, click Install updates.

3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. In the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type msinfo32.exe and then click OK.
  3. In the System Information window, click the Windows Update tab.
  4. On the Windows Update tab, under History, click the Show all updates button.
  5. Under Installation Status, click the Show all updates with an installation status of failed or canceled updates button.
  6. Under Failed or canceled updates, click the View all updates with an installation status of failed or canceled updates (x86) button.
  7. Under Update history, in the Installation items list, click the Update with an installation status of Failed or canceled updates link.
  8. In the Open Update File dialog box, click the Browse button.
  9. In the File dialog box, locate the update package that you want to fix.
  10. Click the Open button.
  11. In the Update File dialog box, click the Repair button.
  12. In the Repair Update dialog box, click the Change settings button.
  13. In the Change settings dialog box, click the Troubleshoot problems with this update check box.
  14. Click the Run button.
  15. In the Troubleshoot problems with this update dialog box, click the Next button.
  16. In the Update Fix Results dialog box, click the Close button.
  17. In the System Information window, under the Windows Update tab, click the OK button.

4. Try a different internet connection

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel and click on the Network and Internet icon.
  2. In the Network and Internet window, click on the Connections tab.
  3. In the Connections window, click on the LAN connection you are having trouble with.
  4. In the Properties window of the LAN connection, click on the Status tab.
  5. In the Status tab, under the Status column, click on the Advanced button.
  6. In the Advanced tab, under the Status column, click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
  7. In the TCP/IP Settings window, under the Local Area Connection heading, click on the Properties button.
  8. In the Properties window of the Local Area Connection, under the General tab, click on the Properties button.
  9. In the Properties window of the Local Area Connection, under the Protocols tab, click on the Add button.
  10. In the Add Protocol window, under the Protocol heading, click on the TCP/IPv4 link text box and enter the following information: Server: 192.168.1.1 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Name: LAN
  11. Click on the OK button.
  12. In the TCP/IPv4 Properties window, under the General tab, click on the OK button.
  13. In the Status tab, under the Status column, click on the OK button.
  14. In the Advanced tab, under the Status column, click on the OK button.
  15. In the TCP/IPv4 Properties window, under the General tab, click on the OK button.
  16. In the Status tab, under the Status column, click on the OK button.
  17. Click on the Close button in the Network and Internet window.
  18. Restart your computer.

5. Reset the Windows Update components

  1. Open the Control Panel and go to the System and Security section.
  2. Click on the Windows Update link.
  3. On the Windows Update page, click on the Settings button.
  4. Under the General tab, click on the Choose how updates are delivered button.
  5. In the Update Delivery Options area, click on the Reset button.
  6. In the Reset settings window, click on the Reset button again.
  7. After the reset is complete, click on the OK button.
  8. If the error code 0x8e5e0408 still persists, then you will need to reinstall the Windows Update components.

6. Disable your antivirus software

Step 1: Open the antivirus software and click on the "Scan" tab. Step 2: Click on the "Advanced" button and select "Disable Protection." Step 3: Click on the "Apply" button to confirm the disablement. Step 4: Click on the "Exit" button to close the antivirus software.

If you didn't find success with an option above, then try:

  1. Temporarily disable your firewall
  2. Delete the SoftwareDistribution folder
  3. Perform a clean boot
  4. Contact Microsoft support
