How do I fix the IRS e-services error code 9?

Error code 9 from the IRS e-services happens when the Social Security number (SSN) or the Employer Identification number (EIN) is incorrect. This error can also happen if the SSN or EIN is already in use by another individual or entity.

1. Check your internet connection and try again

  1. First, try checking your internet connection by visiting a website and trying to load it.
  2. If the website loads, try looking for a reset button or troubleshooting guide on the website.
  3. If the website does not load, try restarting your computer.
  4. If the computer still does not work, try unplugging the modem from the wall and plugging it back in.
  5. If the computer still does not work, try calling your ISP.

2. If you are using a proxy server, disable it and try again

To disable a proxy server, open the Internet Explorer browser, click on the Tools menu, and select Internet Options. In the Internet Options dialog box, click on the Connections tab, and then click on the LAN Settings button. In the LAN Settings dialog box, click on the Proxies tab, and then click on the button to disable the proxy server. Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options dialog box. Repeat the steps to try to fix the irs e services error code 99999.

3. Clear your browser's cache and cookies, and try again

  1. Open your browser and go to the "Tools" menu.
  2. Select "Internet Options."
  3. On the "General" tab, click on the "Settings" button.
  4. Under "Cache" and "Cookies," clear the respective fields.
  5. Click on "OK."
  6. Reload the page.
  7. If the error persists, try resetting your browser settings. This can be done by going to:
  • Windows: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options

4. Try accessing IRS e-Services through a different browser

  1. Open a new browser window and go to the IRS website.
  2. Click on the "IRS e-Services" link in the main navigation bar.
  3. On the IRS e-Services homepage, click on the "Forgot Your Password?" link in the lower-left corner.
  4. Enter your e-mail address and the e-mail address you used when you registered for IRS e-Services.
  5. Click on the "I forgot my password" link in the e-mail that you receive.
  6. Enter your e-mail address and the password that you used to register for IRS e-Services.
  7. Click on the "Reset Password" link.
  8. Enter your new password and click on the "Reset Password" button.
  9. Click on the "Log In" button.
  10. Enter your user name and password.
  11. Click on the "Log In" button.
