The Liftmaster error code 4-1 usually occurs when the Liftmaster garage door opener sensor detects an obstruction in the garage door opening path. This can be caused by a piece of furniture, a large animal, or a person. If the obstruction is not corrected within a minute, the Liftmaster system will issue an error code and will not allow the garage door to open.

1. Reset the liftmaster

  1. Open the garage door opener unit and locate the dip switches.
  2. Locate the switch labeled "reset." This switch is usually red.
  3. Use a small screwdriver to flip the switch to the "off" position.
  4. Close the garage door opener unit.
  5. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Open the garage door opener unit and flip the reset switch back to the "on" position.
  7. Close the garage door opener unit.

2. Clear the liftmaster's code

  1. Start with the garage door opener in the locked position.
  2. Press and hold the "Lock" button on the garage door opener for approximately five seconds.
  3. Enter the four-digit code on the keypad that you wish to use.
  4. Press the "Lock" button again to confirm the code.
  5. Press and hold the "Up" arrow button on the garage door opener for approximately five seconds.
  6. Press and hold the "Down" arrow button on the garage door opener for approximately five seconds.
  7. The garage door opener will now be reset and the code will be cleared.

3. Reset the liftmaster's programming

  1. If the garage door opener is plugged into an outlet, unplug it.
  2. Press and hold the learn button on the garage door opener.
  3. While holding the learn button, plug the garage door opener back into the outlet.
  4. After about two seconds, the garage door opener's indicator light will begin flashing. At this point, release the learn button.
  5. The garage door opener is now reset and the indicator light should be solid.

4. Reset the liftmaster's controller

  1. If you are receiving a LiftMaster error code 4-1, it is likely due to an issue with the controller. In order to reset the controller, you will need to first disconnect the power.
  2. Once the power is disconnected, you will need to remove the cover of the controller.
  3. Inside the controller, you will find a switch labeled "RESET." Flip this switch to the "ON" position.
  4. Reconnect the power to the controller.
  5. Once the power is restored, flip the "RESET" switch back to the "OFF" position.
  6. Replace the cover on the controller.
  7. The controller should now be reset and should be operational.
