Solution 1. Download the Windows Update files again

Error code 0x800f0831 in Windows Update may be due to interruption during the download causing some files to be damaged. The interruption might be due to third-party software or sudden computer shut down. You may want to download the files again and run your PC in clean boot. 

Step 1. Clean boot

  1. Click Windows Start, type in msconfig and then press Enter.

  2. At the General tab, select Selective Startup.
  3. Uncheck the Load startup items.
  4. Go to services tab, check Hide all Mircosoft services and then click Disable all.
  5. Click Apply, then click OK and click Restart.

Step 2. Delete SoftwareDistribution folder

  1. Windows Start. Type “services “in the search bar and press enter. A services window will pop up.

  2. Look for “Windows Update” service. Right-click it and select stop. (Don’t close the window yet)
  3. Browse to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\download
  4. Crt + A to highlight all files. Press right click on the highlighted files. The select delete. Wait until all files are deleted.
  5. Return to the services window. Look for “Windows Update” service. Right-click it select start.
  6. Try  Windows Update.

Solution 2. Reset the Windows update components manually

Error code 0x800f0831 in Windows Update may also be due to some Windows Update component that has encountered a problem or the services for Windows Update stopped. You may want to reset the Windows Update components manually. 

  1. Click Windows start type in CMD. Right-click the Command prompt and run as admin.

  2. Then, type in net stop wuauserv and then press Enter key.
  3. Next, type in net stop bits and then press Enter key.
  4. Next, type in net stop cryptsvc and then press Enter key.
  5. Next, type in net stop msiserver and then press Enter key.
  6. Rename SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 by typing the below line to the Command prompt.
    • ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.bak and then press Enter key.
    • ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak and then press Enter key.

Enable services for Windows Update after doing the steps above

  1. Click Windows start type in CMD. Right-click the Command prompt and run as admin.
  2. Then, type in net start wuauserv and then press Enter key.
  3. Next, type in net start bits and then press Enter key.
  4. Next, type in net start cryptsvc and then press Enter key.
  5. Next, type in net Start msiserver and then press Enter key.
