2. Reset the Windows update components manually

  1. Click Windows start type in CMD. Right-click the Command prompt and run as admin.

  2. Type the command below and press Enter key for each command to execute. net stop bits net stop wuauserv
    net stop
    appidsvc
    net stopcryptsvc

  3. Rename SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2. Press Enter key for each command to execute.
    ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.bak
    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak

Enable services for Windows Update after doing the steps above

  1. Click Windows start type in CMD. Right-click the Command prompt and run as admin.

  2. Type the command below and press Enter key for each command to execute. net start bits
    net start wuauserv
    net startappidsvc
    net startcryptsvc

  3. Run Windows updates, see if error code 0x800f0831 is fixed.
