How to fix Windows Update (error code: 80004004)?

WindowsUpdate_80004004 is an error code that typically occurs when there is a problem with the Windows Update service or the files that it uses. This can be caused by a number of factors, including corrupt files, incorrect permissions, or a problem with the Windows Update service itself. In most cases, this error can be resolved by running the Windows Update Troubleshooter or by manually resetting the Windows Update service.

1. Restart the Windows Update service

  1. To restart the Windows Update service, open the Services console by typing services.msc in the Start menu search bar.
  2. Locate and select the Windows Update service.

  4. The service will restart and should now be working again.

2. Clear the Windows Update cache

  1. Press the Windows key and type "regedit".
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\DoNotCheckForUpdates
  3. On the right, double-click on "WindowsUpdate" and change the value of "Enabled" to "0".
  4. Close Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

3. Reset the Windows Update Components

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. In the dialog box, type winver and then click OK.
  3. In the window that opens, click on the Settings tab.
  4. In the Settings tab, under Windows Update, click on the Reset button.
  5. In the Reset window that opens, type in your administrator account password and then click on the Reset button.
  6. After the reset is complete, click on the Update settings button.
  7. In the Update settings window that opens, click on the checkboxes next to the following components: a. Windows Update b. Windows Update Services c. Windows Defender d. Windows Update Agent e. Windows Update Client f. Windows Update Installation Service g. Windows Search h. Windows Update Delivery Optimization i. Windows Update Web Services
  8. Click on the OK button to save the changes.

  2. Run the DISM tool.
  3. Install the latest Windows Updates manually.
