Solution 1. Format Drive to HFS+

“Mac error code 50” may occur if you are using an external storage device formatted in NTFS, which is for Windows, you cannot use it for Mac. Please, format the external hard drive to HFS+ so you could avoid the error. 

NOTE: All files in your external storage device will be deleted. If you would like to proceed, please see instructions below.

  1. Click Go and select Utilities.

  2.  Look for Disk Utility and run it.
  3. Click Erase tab.
  4. In Format drop box, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  5. In Name text box, input the drive name you want.
  6. Then click Erase.

Solution 2. Test your Storage device

“Mac error code 50” may also occur if your storage device is faulty. This solution will check your disk health and repair it if it is still repairable. Run it and wait for the process to end and then try transferring file.

  1. Click Go and select Utilities.

  2. Look for Disk Utility and run it.
  3. Click Verify Disk. 
  4. If you see an error message in red font, click Repair Disk.
  5. Then, try again.

If the damage to your hard drive is irreparable, please replace it or if it has a warranty, please claim it.

Solution 3. Use Dot_clean

“Mac error code 50” may also occur if you are transferring a file that came from Windows because some files are only readable by Windows. This process will convert the Windows file to a Mac file.

  1. Click Go and select Utilities.

  2. Look for Terminal and run it.
  3. In the Terminal, type in “dot_clean”(space).
  4. Then drag the folder or file you want to transfer or type in the file location.
    NOTE: Do not forget the space between dot_clean the address of the dragged file.
  5. Then, press Enter.
  6. Now, copy and paste the Folder or File.

Solution 4. Unlock the folder 

“Mac error code 50” may also occur if your account does not have the permission to access or do anything with the file. If your account is the administrator, you have the permission to change the file’s accessibility. Please see below

  1. Right-click the file you would like to transfer.

  3. In the File Info, look for Sharing & Permission.
  4. Set all to Read & Write.
  5. Try file transfer again.
