Windows error code 0x80070005 is an Access Denied error when you lack file access or registry permissions to install the update.

Solution 1.

Error Code 0x80070005  occurs in many situations. Most of the time the error takes place when a user account installed or update a software without an administrative privilege. This event is a security protocol of the operating system. The protocol prevents compromising the system by an unknown or a standard user. Please contact the owner of the PC to do some change and avoid the error. However, if you are the owner of the device and is not able to log in as an administrator, please see Solution 1. 

In some situation, error Code 0x80070005 is caused by a malware. For example, a downloaded Windows update file is compromised by a malware and is blocking your administrative privilege (Please see solution 2). Also, the downloaded Windows update file was corrupt during the download process, which may lock the file preventing your account to access and do any changes (Please see solution 3).

Run as Administrator

  1. Click Start and then type in CMD.
  2. Right click CMD and select run as admin.
  3. In the Command Prompt type in net user administrator /active:yes and the hit enter.

  4. Click start, then click the power button and select sign-out.
  5. Then log in as an Administrator.
  6. Run Windows Update.

Edit user account with administrative privilege

  1. Click start and type in run and hit enter.

  2. Type in netplwiz and press enter.
  3. Select your username and click properties.
  4. Click Group membership and click the Administrator.
  5. Click Apply and then OK.
  6. Click start, then click the power button and select sign-out.
  7. Then login using the user with administrative privilege.
  8. Run Windows Update.

Solution 2: Run Anti-virus

There is a chance that the Access Denied could be related to a malware contamination on your Windows. Windows registry and files might be broken or corrupted due to the malware, causing the error when running the update. A Full scan  your computer using Windows defender.  NOTE: You may use 3rd party Antivirus.

  1. Update and run Windows Defender.

  3. Run Windows update.

Solution 3: Delete SoftwareDistribution and run DISM command with sfc /scannow command

Delete SoftwareDistribution

  1. Windows Start. Type “services “in the search bar and press enter. A services window will pop up.

  2. Look for “Windows Update” service. Right click it and select stop. (Don’t close the window yet)
  3. Browse to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\download
  4. Crt + A to highlight all files. Press right click on the highlighted files. The select delete. Wait until all files are deleted.
  5. Return to the services window. Look for “Windows Update” service. Right click it, select start then restart your computer.

Run DISM command with sfc /scannow command

  1. Click Windows Start, type in Command prompt.

  2. Right click and run as Admin.
  3. Type in or copy and paste this command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth to the Command Prompt.
  4. Wait until the process is complete.
  5. Type in or copy and paste this command  sfc /scannow to the Command Prompt.
  6. Wait until the process is complete, and then Run Windows update.
