iPhone error 17 is an error that usually occurs when iTunes is unsuccessful in connecting and downloading the IPSW file from Apple’s server.

Solution 1. Check if something is interrupting iTunes’ connection to the Apple server 

iPhone error 17 is a diagnosis of iTunes that there may be a communication problem between your iTunes and the Apple server. You might want to check your Windows/ MAC if a software or your ISP is interrupting your iTunes from connecting to the Apple server. 

  1. Log-in to an administrative user account, so you have the privilege to fully use the iTunes.

  2. Make sure the date, time, and time zone are correct, to fully synchronize your iTunes to the Apple server.

  3. Make sure your Windows or OS X updated, to avoid the missing supporting update.

  5. If you think your operating system infected by malicious software, update, and scan using an anti-virus.
  6. After scanning your computer, disable your anti-virus including firewall and VPN that may interrupt the connection.
  7. Then make sure that your ISP is not having any problem. Use a browser and go to Speedtest.net to verify.

Solution 2. Disable Host

iPhone error 17 may also occur when the host files cause a problem when accessing the Apple server. You might also want to remove it temporarily. 

For Windows

For OS X

  1. Use finder, click Go and select Go to folder.

  2. Type in “/private/etc/hosts” and press Go.

  3. Run iTunes on your computer and plug in your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
  4. Once the restoration is complete, return the host file to /private/etc.

Then, try to upgrade your iPhone. If the error persists, you may want to ask help from the Apple service center.
