The p0496 error code is caused by a problem with the evaporative emission control system. This system is responsible for controlling the release of vapors from the engine. When the system is not working properly, the engine can produce too much pollution.

Users typically search for a solution by asking about:

  • error code p0496
  • p0496

1. Check and replace the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge volume control solenoid valve

  1. Open the hood and locate the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve.
  2. Remove the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve from the vehicle.
  3. Inspect the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve for damage. If the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve is damaged, replace it.
  4. Install the new EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve in the same location as the original.
  5. Close the hood.

2. Check the hoses going to and from the EVAP canister for leaks

  1. Remove the EVAP canister cover.
  2. Inspect the hoses for leaks. If there are leaks, fix them.
  3. Reinstall the EVAP canister cover.

3. Check the EVAP canister for cracks or leaks

  1. Remove the EVAP canister cover.
  2. Look for any cracks or leaks in the canister.
  3. If there are any cracks or leaks, fix them using a sealant.

If you didn't find success with an option above, then try:

  1. Check the EVAP canister vent valve for proper operation
  2. Replace the EVAP canister
  3. Check for a clogged or restricted EVAP canister filter
  4. Check for a blockage in the EVAP canister purge line
